Honestly, I think most if not all luxury brands are based on that. They profit on the fact that rich people will buy them just to differentiate from the plebs who can’t afford their products.
One of my economy professors in university put it as “no one wears a Rolex to have a very accurate wristwatch”.
There are benefits to buying “premium” brands in terms of quality and durability but after you get into the “luxury”/“designer” range it’s all about displaying wealth.
Rolex is interesting because I think it’s the ugliest watches I have ever seen. I wouldn’t wear one if it was given to me. I don’t understand the appeal, and people who bought them could not explain it to me when I asked.

Yeah I think Tudor, Rolex’s ‘value’ brand makes much nicer looking watches that I’d actually wear.
