They are usually melanistic gray squirrels and there are pockets of them scattered throughout North America. I’ve personally seen quite a few in a local town in upstate New York.
We have black squirrels like that in the UK in the North Hertfordshire area. Apparently they are spreading and taking over from the greys. I’m not sure if that makes them friends of the reds.
That’s a pretty dark squirrel. Darker than I’m accustomed to seeing. I’m curious what part of the world this would be.

We’ve got squirrels like that in Alberta. I think I’ve seen them in Ontario too, but not Manitoba.
