The term commonly accepted today is died by suicide. It takes into account that suicide is commonly tied to underlying mental health challenges and isn’t necessarily a choice the victim made, but rather a lethal symptom of those mental health conditions.
Nursing student here - this is the current teaching/standard.
“Committed” is so hard wired that even the profs default to that in lecture (then immediately correct themselves), but this change is 100% to address the accusatory connotation of “committed”.
…also, veteran here: WHAT THE FUCK, VA?! The VA has a history of not really giving a shit about politics and just providing patient care when it’s needed. Vet needs an abortion deep in a red state? Suck a dick, red state, this is federal property and your laws don’t mean shit here.
The VA I go to used to have trans and LGBTQ+ positive signage at every entrance basically saying “You served? Fuck yeah, you get the same level of care as every other vet!” …then Agent Orange popped his DEI executive order, and all that stuff is gone. Just overnight full embrace to shun and gutpunch.
And while yes, culpability lies primarily with the shitstain squatting in the Oval Office, the admins and doctors at the VA have full-on violated their oaths as healthcare professionals by ‘just following orders’ here. And now they have a body count to show for it.

I’ve seen the term “completed” suicide.

This country is an absolute disgrace.
