I don’t get the hate this place gets. It’s been really interesting watching Lemmy’s growing pains over the last two-ish years and all the changes it has undergone. The whole concept of the Fediverse is fascinating to me and has been a genuine delight to explore.

Agreed. I never even had Instagram or twitter but I’ve become a pixelfed and mastodon lurker after enjoying Lemmy for 1+ years. The comment section here is miles ahead of reddit, where you get repost after repost and the same old tired jokes in every comment section.
The fediverse is fantastic and I’m happy to be a (very minor) part of it.

I’m almost 40, this place reminds me of the early internet in a good way. Like, people connecting and sharing ideas… what even Reddit used to feel like. Sure, sometimes there are arguments but, due to the lack of an “outage” algorithm to juice engagement, you usually only hear about it unless it’s something you directly follow. With the lack of profit motive on the side of the platform and hosting end of things, it appears that trolls and clout chasers have a genuine hard time monopolizing everyone’s attention.

I’m a little older and while all my buddies were on the internet in the early days it didn’t interest me but I was well aware of how it functioned.

I was a reddit lurker back when it was cool and a place to gain knowledge (depending on the sub) then a few years back finally becoming a user until the last couple years seeing it really go down hill fast turning into a typical " social media platform"

Leemy gives me a sense of nostalgia for something I missed out on in the past. …And I don’t feel like an asshole scrolling in my spare time

I feel that as well, but I think that may be as a consequence of there being such a small user base. It may go away with time.

I blame Tankies. They’re too aggressive with their “liberals this, liberals that” bullshit, which drives a way a lot of people cause that makes Lemmy look like a MAGA-infested shithole to anyone who doesn’t know what a Tankie this.

Hexbear and LemmyGrad’s bullshit almost made me quit Lemmy day one, until I learned how instances work and how to block them. I imagine that less-determined redditors will take one look at this place, see a liberal-bashing post, and then immediately fuck off.

I wish Tankies would just stay in their own god damn space, and keep their bootlicking politics to themselves. They’re ruining Lemmy.

Quite frankly I’m not looking forward to the renewed deluge of Reddit opinions like “the US Army is socialism”

I mean, tbf, joining the military IS what made me start looking into the concept of Socialism and what it means.

Is the military socialism? No, us Enlisted have no power and the Officer corps is the “owning class”, but we have good, tax payer funded social benefits that I believe everyone should have access to.

It’s like a gateway drug into anti-capitalism idealogies. If the US is never going to go full socialist (or at least not in our lifetimes), then I think raising taxes and giving everyone TRICARE, VA Loan benefits, tuition assistance, and a pension will go a long way in solving most people’s biggest fears/relieving a metric fuckton of oppression caused by capitalism.

Also, having been to the Middle East and seen firsthand the stark difference of people driving around Ducatis and Lambos, parking in front malls inlaid with real gold, while 10 minutes up the road whole communities had built their shack homes in the desert with random odds and ends and thrown blankets over their windows was…I cant really describe the feeling I got. Dread, anger, immense sadness, just a whole myriad of negative emotions. Couple that with the intense religious fervor that is rampant in the region, and yeah, I have no idea how a military member can look at all that and be like “This. This is what America needs.”

Granted, yes, unfortunately a lot of our service men and women are still unfortunately extremely pro-Capitalism/Trump and Elon Musk fanboys…I just don’t know how.

Either way, my comment got long, but when people start in on the “The Army is Socialist!” Dont be mad. Educate! They’re at the very least coming from a place of “Fuck, we really could make everyones lives better if we give everyone these benefits that we enjoy so much!” And that shows compassion for others, which is something so fucking desperately needed right now.

                Oh I believe that 100%!

I suppose I’m a little more patient with it because I went through the same change myself, AND because I like people (finally) pointing out that we do have a system for socialized healthcare in America!

I blame the anti-tankies. Like this is the only site i even see the termed even used and it looks like a weird hysteria for most. The community is already smal so it looks relay wired. Even this whinny attitude of blocking every one on this tiny space give real off vibes.

I am much more liberal with the block on lemmy than reddit simply because I know that I will probably have to interact with the person again if I don’t block them. I dont think I ever blocked more than maybe 10 people in the entirety of my time on reddit. on lemmy I block basically everyone I just don’t want to hear from.

Can confirm - I’m new here and when I see pieces of shit who’d be right at home amongst the people my grandfather killed in WWII (AKA nazis) it doesn’t make me more interested in sticking around. At this point IDGAF why they think they way they think, they can fuck off into the sun. At some point I’ll see whatever blocking thing there is and it will get better. Still an improvement over reddit.

We know, it was a team effort.

There was also that broken Nazi/Soviet pact and all that carving up of other peoples countries though that was supposed to go the other way.

And look, another Nazi plot with the Russians.

The Nazis had pacts with literally everyone. The Soviets were one of the last to sign one, because they had spent the proceeding years trying to form an explicitly anti-Nazi pact with the capitalist nations, only to be rebuffed.

If Chamberlain had listened to Stalin, the war either wouldn’t have happened, or it would have been over much more quickly.

It’s the cutting up other peoples countries part without their say that the bully countries never understand.

There was also a secret protocol to the pact, which was revealed only after Germany’s defeat in 1945[101] although hints about its provisions had been leaked much earlier, so as to influence Lithuania.[102] According to the protocol, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland were divided into German and Soviet “spheres of influence”.[101] In the north, Finland, Estonia, and Latvia were assigned to the Soviet sphere.[101] Poland was to be partitioned in the event of its “political rearrangement”: the areas east of the PisaNarewVistula, and San rivers would go to the Soviet Union, and Germany would occupy the west.[101] Lithuania, which was adjacent to East Prussia, was assigned to the German sphere of influence, but a second secret protocol, agreed to in September 1939, reassigned Lithuania to the Soviet Union.[103] According to the protocol, Lithuania would be granted its historical capital, Vilniuswhich was part of Poland during the interwar period. Another clause stipulated that Germany would not interfere with the Soviet Union’s actions towards Bessarabia, which was then part of Romania.[101] As a result, Bessarabia as well as the Northern Bukovina and Hertsa regions were occupied by the Soviets and integrated into the Soviet Union.

Please tell me what alternative there was for these “cut up countries”. If the USSR hadn’t established military presence in these countries, they’d just have been invaded by the Nazis. Maybe you expect the Soviet Union, after being ignored for a decade of mutual defense negotiations, to selflessly send its people to die for the countries that refused a military alliance? Like literally, what was the alternative here

What a bunch of bullshit. It was naked irredentism as Stalin conquered countries that had gained their independence from Russia during the Revolutions and you know it.

And they were damn well proven right to be mistrustful of Russian chauvinism.
