Holy shit, this is actually even dumber than it is malicious. Sending a mass email on a weekend and expecting people to work outside of their scheduled working hours, when some of the people will be scheduled off, out sick, or not even scheduled to work on those days is just stupid. Like anyone who has actually worked a job would realize how fucking stupid that expectation is. It is the arrogance of someone who has always bought their way into a position at a job and puts work over their family logic.

The reason this matters is that a significant number of people who are supposed to be working for the government are doing so little work that they are not checking their email at all!

In some cases, we believe non-existent people or the identities of dead people are being used…

      — Elon Musk

There are ways to verify that they are living, like maybe checking to see if the Social Security office has a record of their death?

This is like his stupid one car death trap version of a subway.

It’s only stupid if you think it’s being done in good faith. As a trap, to be used as a pretext to manufacture cause to fire people, sending it on the weekend makes perfect sense.

It’s the same reason Trump picked Friday night to purge the military leadership and install regime loyalists – when authoritarians do things like that, it’s because they want people to fail to pay attention.

Hardly anything Trump or Musk have been doing is “stupid” measured by what their real goals actually are, as opposed to naively believing what they claim them to be.

No, it can be both stupid and not in good faith. If it wasn’t stupid, they would have done it during a weekday so they didn’t look like morons who don’t understand what a weekend is. This isn’t like firing on a Friday to avoid the news cycle. This is something that was obviously going to backfire on Musk.

If they didn’t want to look like idiots they would have done it on a Wednesday so people would be panicking about getting it done before the weekend and the general populace would have seen it as government workers not checking email for two working days. The timing they picked was guaranteed failure from the moment they pushed send on a Saturday.
