The “Just War Cause” was created by St. Augustine if I remember. The criteria to make war justified was 1. “Do we have the right to go to war” and 2. “Do we conduct ourselves correctly at war”.
and lets be clear about #2, the answer was always “yes”, because for the longest time, it was considered a duty to rape and pillage the enemy. Only around ww1, when we were facing and fighting people that were basically the same as us did we start ti think “hey, maybe we shouldn’t be total assholes”. and but it still happens. in every conflict. probably in every battle.
