This has happened to me when I lost my wallet in Pennsylvania as well
Yes, it can happen anywhere (and a good relationship with your neighbors is the best way to improve your safety anywhere). There is an office in town hall for it here, though, which is pretty wild to me. An unknown number just called me and told me to come pick it up, and it wasn’t extortion!
I still don’t know how they got my number. It was a prepaid phone and the number’s not in my wallet. If they wanted to cross reference my address registration they could, but that’s so much work.
It’s not that much work. It’s probably just punching your license number into the computer.
I didn’t have an id issued by Germany in my wallet at the time, nor did I have anything with my German address on it. I was still registered with the town, so they could do it by name and DOB, but that’s still more than I would expect.
I told this story wrong, and didn’t mention any of this, though lol.
Oh, I forgot that this was in Germany. Yeah, it’s probably far more hassle there; I know how Germany is about data protection.
Same, but I’m in Indiana. They put it under my wiper blade. Ironically, I live in an area with a large immigrant population, so that may have had an influence on the fact that it was returned.
