Congressman Al Green and fellow Democrats began singing the civil rights song “We Shall Overcome,” after the House voted to censure the Texas lawmaker.

Green was given the rebuke for heckling and waving his cane at Donald Trump during the president’s joint session of Congress. Ten Democrats joined Republicans to vote for the censure.

Civility as the end all/be all over anything else? Must be a Democrat.

I don’t think you’re aware of what’s happening all around Lemmy. The poster I’m replying to may not as well. You’re just helping the trolls without realizing. In a perfect world, yes, we should be able to yell and scream at each other without it having consequences, but that’s not the case right now. I’ll give you some reasons why:

      • People are distracted by hearing about the democrats instead of this awesome dude standing up for what’s right. We should be talking about how cool he is and what a role model he is.
      • Being overly negative is a troll technique, whether you realize you’re doing it or not. To be clear, I don’t think you’re a troll.
      • We are in the midst of an internal coup and dismantling of our government, do you think talking about that part and calling attention to that would help people get their attention? Instead the dude I’m speaking with is distracting from that and talking about the dems. Again, a troll technique. He may or may not be a troll.
      • People skim, if it’s boring and repetitive, they’ll move on. The dude is repeating boring and repetitive remarks about the dems.
      • This is why I don’t accept posts about Biden or Harris, troll baiting, boring, and repetitive.

Here is some light reading in case you missed it (it’s also stickied at the top):

No one is screaming. The other person was calling out the other Dems for not supporting Green, who is obviously one of the only ones worth a damn. Ineffectual leadership from an opposition party is far more damaging than simply calling their bullshit for what it is.

Congrats on amalgamating some links, anyone that has a brain knows trump is putin’s lap dog, we’re pissed because the plan has been published for months in Project 2025 and the Dems have nothing fucking prepared against it, the majority of them at this point are arguably hamstringing resistance more than helping it. Look at the leaks from their leadership/donor meetings, look at Newsome’s quick heel turn against trans folks, look at their feckless response to everything that trump and co are doing. They need to be made aware that we can see through their bullshit response, and maybe they’ll act, and if not they need to be replaced as soon as possible. Push has come to shove and if they aren’t willing to lead then they need to get out of the damn way.

Yeah, because I’m an elected official, right? Someone who ran a whole campaign and got people to vote for me based on my qualities of leadership?

But sure let’s play this game: How about fucking anything? Delay, obstruct, filibuster, use the GOP’s own playbook against them for a start. Literally anything would be better than holding up useless little signs while capitulating, then admonishing Green for actually having a pair. They should be out rallying people, at the very least making some noise. They should be applying pressure to vulnerable GOP members who barely won their seats by organizing in their districts, make them state their direct support of Trump’s and Elon’s bullshit to their constituents.

FFS, Elon, the richest piece of shit in the world, is the easiest thing to get people worked up against if they actually embraced working class issues, but they’re too afraid they’ll upset their rich donors.

The saddest thing is this was all so very predictable the moment they decided Biden was their candidate. If I still had facebook, I’d show you my old post stating that Biden would win against Trump, serve one term where he would do little to nothing to actually counter him (“fundamentally, nothing will change”) or sway America away from MAGA mentality, then lose to someone even worse than Trump (Trump 2.0 is worse, but even I couldn’t predict America would be this stupid).
