I learned about this recently, it’s the lack of carpet - which leaves tile and wood as flooring options. Tile is better for the heat and wood is better for cold environments (aka Russia and the eastern block).
Apparently (in the US at least) it was this huge push during the cold wars to “appear” better off than Russia so the style of housing changed dramatically.

Also the hue of the lighting reminds me of India.
