I ride a newish KLX300 that I haven’t had any problems with yet. Today I decided to go on a quick after work ride to the canyon near my house. The canyon’s mostly dirt roads and gets rough near the top.

As I was working my way slowly over a rough patch the bike suddenly shut off. The engine died and the instrument panel lost power. The bike is EFI so I figure I lost electricity which caused the engine to die as well.

I checked what I could like fuses and obvious connections that might have come loose. I ended up catching a ride down the canyon and went back up later to trailer the bike down.

My initial suspicion is that the battery lost charge. I figure this could be due to a bad battery or a bad stator. Any tips on how to determine if the stator is bad? I’m hoping to go over things with a multi meter now that I’ve got the bike home.

Do you have any lights on the dash indicating it has any power at all? It’s strange to suddenly lose all power, usually the bike will run poorly for a bit, or the lights/dash will dim, or the bike will still attempt to spin the starter with a battery issue.

If you have no power at all, I’d be checking the battery itself and the leads from it first. It’s very strange for the battery to just die outright, so it’s likely a lost terminal lead or something similar.

No lights at all on the dash. It seemed strange to me as well to loose power all at once. The bike was running fine right up until it died as well.

My initial thought is that a cable came loose or melted or I lost a fuse. I pulled the seat and side panels but couldn’t see anything that looked physically wrong with any of the wiring. I tried reseating all fuses with no luck as well. I didn’t have a multimeter with me on the trail so I wasn’t able to do too much diagnoses.

I probably won’t have time to look at it in depth until Sunday or Monday. I’ll start by testing the battery and then probably start testing connections. I’ll update the thread here with what I find.

I’d test connections first. Complete and total sudden shutdown with no evidence of electrical functionality at all indicates to me that possibly one of your battery terminal connectors came off, or one of the main battery cables snapped. I believe the KLX300 should also have a main fuse, coming straight off of the battery. Did you check that? On most bikes it is separate from the usual lights/horn/accessories/etc. fuses.
