I just wrapped up today’s Makuuchi bouts, a little distracted because of my poor ol sick cat currently so I didn’t watch them as closely as usual. I did notice that graceful Ura flip though.

      that graceful Ura flip

That was hilarious! The funny thing was, you could see him trying not to smile afterwards, and everyone in the crowd’s laughing but the dignitaries in the front row were keeping a serious face and tut-tutting and maybe stifling a smile.

That bout’s not in this video btw, I saw it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqWQ5q7qFPk

Papayasu looked really strong in that one as well, solid rapid thrusts kept Ura trying to defend. He is a really strong rikishi but I feel like his age, style, and injuries will keep him from getting his first title sadly. If he was more on the belt he could use his raw power better but he’s a pusher/thruster mainly.

He always seems to do good on one half of the basho, but not the whole thing.

          Papayasu

lel I never heard Takayasu called that. It sounds a bit too much like the Spanish word “payaso” (clown). But you know, even if he doesn’t get a title it’s still pretty amazing just to be in Makuuchi.

I had to do some work real late tonight and I just saw Ura’s match live! I’m gonna pay for it tomorrow alertnesswise but it was worth it.

wikipedia says the nickname came around after his daughter was born in 2021, but to me he always kinda seemed like a papa bear anyway-- maybe just from being hairy :D

Ura’s flip into Ichiyamamoto is the highlight of the tournament so far. We’ll have to see if anything beats it.
