Wanted to get a pre-watch thread out a little early so we could get some discussion going on theories and speculation for the season finale. I’m a couple episodes behind but I’m watching now to get caught up. What are your thoughts on what’s going to go down in the season finale?

EDIT: Ok, I’m caught up now. Watched the last 3 episodes back to back and I am just…disappointed. Feels like nothing has happened. There’s just no intrigue, no suspense, no feeling of paranoia. And I couldn’t help but laugh at Fury’s speech about how he didn’t want to call in superheroes because he feels like it’s his responsibility. I’m like, well, the responsible thing to keep WW3 from happening would be to call in some help to ensure the world doesn’t implode. I mean, I get why, logistically, but story wise it just makes no sense.

Also, the security around the president just seemed really lacking. Like they just took him to some random hospital. Where was the SS?

As far as what’s to come. I really have no idea. I’m sure there’s going to be a fight between Gravik and G’iah with Fury’s help, but it really feels like it’s going to be underwhelming and end in a flutter. Then there will be some after credits tease that throws something crazy at us to keep us interested. But I just can’t help but be disappointed. THIS is Secret Invasion, really? That’s it. Ugh.

Yeah, you’re caught up, disappointment all around.

Skrulls needed more build-up before SI so they could both flesh out the threat and give you more in them to identify with so you cared. Now we have a Fury who we haven’t seen for a while, a race of shapeshifters who are… fine? Convenient? Comic relief? I get why they want earth, but it’s rude to take other peoples’ stuff, and Fury is clearly old. Gravik kills everybody, even his own people for the slightest suspicion but several details leak to Talos and he doesn’t deal with his daughter immediately?

This whole thing seems stream of consciousness, like it was actually written by AI. They had Martin Freeman, who they wasted utterly and alienated us with his death, they had Hill, who they wasted utterly and alienated us with her death, they had Talos who they alienated us with his death. Waiting for Rhodey and Fury to die right now. And they weren’t good deaths either, none of them. This whole thing just reminds me of the new indiana jones movies where it’s clear Ford is checked out, and it’s visibly painful for him to try to run, but we wanted an Indiana Jones story, so here it is, suck it up.

Marvel: Don’t try to make psychopath villains if you don’t do build-up in previous work, it makes them seem like an empty threat of the week, we lose investment, this threat is somewhat nebulous (war will break out? We’ve had war before, Fury can tell the avengers and have them stop it if it comes to that), and while Skrulls have been mild fun in the past, that was literally just Talos and Ben Mendelsohn, the rest of them really don’t register to us much.

Technically, Martin Freeman alienated himself by dying 👉😎👉

Couldn’t agree more. We basically only even know of the Skrulls from Captain Marvel, and that took place almost 3 decades ago in MCU time. They just haven’t been a thing to care about. That really feels like one of the big problems in the MCU now. They did such great build up of characters pre-Infinity War, but now they’re just throwing things in with no build up.

IW took a decade of almost painfully slow buildup, but it paid off phenomenally.

We’ve all been marvel-ed out since then, it’s so hard to really care about villains of the week, and gravik is barely one of those. He needed more play in far from home or somewhere, not just random_skrull_09, and none of his individual threats have really seemed impactful.

This is so unimaginative, they’ve done better, loki for instance, this feels like it belonged on Netflix back in 2014, and we’ve moved on from that.

The MCU has been my “Star Wars”, but now getting this fatigue and seeing all the disappointment makes me sad. I guess not unlike Star Wars, heh.

Iw/Endgame was incredible, but it was like coitus after 10 years of steady and intense edging.

They need 1-2 phases for everyone to relax so they can start slowly building again, otherwise it won’t work.

But they did a phenomenal job up till Endgame, should have been called avengers: long game.

You know what really disappoints me? Watching people that don’t enjoy something dominate the conversation around it.

All of this whining, “it’s not enough”, “I was expecting more”. Those are you problems. I’ve been really enjoying it. We got to see the birth of super skrulls, we learned how fury rose to the top, key figures have been replaced, we got easter eggs and cameos reflecting that other parts of the world have their own nick furys, we’ve seen great performances by the actors and its been an enjoyable show.

If you don’t enjoy it, don’t dwell on it so much. I promise you your disappointment is based more on your unrealistic expectations and not the product you received.

I can’t help but be reminded of the saying “If you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. If you run into assholes all day, you’re the asshole”.

The conversation is dominated by people being disappointed because for most fans, the show is disappointing. I’m glad you’re enjoying it, but the whole point of these threads is to discuss the episodes. I could say the same thing that you being disappointed in everyone else not liking it is a you problem. The Secret Invasion comics were such a huge event that affected the entire universe and everyone in it, but this show just feels like…nothing. Of course you can’t 100% adapt the comic, but this show is just devoid of all the impact the comics had. Of course most fans are going to be disappointed. We literally have source material to guide our expectations.

If you don’t enjoy it, don’t dwell on it so much. I promise you your disappointment is based more on your unrealistic expectations and not the product you received.

You act like we’re just sitting around all day being mad at the show. You’re in the discussion thread specifically made for thoughts about the show. That’s the outlet for thoughts about it and then we go on with our lives. It seems more like you are the one with the outlying opinion, and that’s fine, but don’t act like just because you’re enjoying it, everyone else’s opinion is invalid.

“We don’t just sit around hating the shows all day”

Says the guy that started a new episode thread three days before the episode releases to complain about it.

Lol, I’m a mod of this community and I make the discussion threads every week. I didn’t just make a random thread to complain. No wonder you’re enjoying the show so much, you’re not paying attention.

Yeah, because I pay the same attention to a good story as I do to a whiny community online. Sad to see that an worthwhile discussion of the MCU died with reddit.

Sir, I just wanna call out that having plot points in a show doesn’t make it good. There’s a common notion thrown around today in response to this reductive line of thinking that “plot does not equal good”. Tv and movies are visual mediums with different components that have to come together in a cohesive way to actually create something worthwhile. Secret Invasion cares about nothing but plot - it doesn’t care about writing, direction, cinematography, costume/ set design, or literally anything that the audience can reasonably pick up on. It only cares about serving up whatever plot points are bare bones required for whatever the next marvel show is.

You cannot promise with any degree of honesty or integrity that all the negative reception to this bad show is from people who have unrealistic expectations.

All of the complaints I’ve seen boil down to: " but i wanted it to be this". And yes, that’s all on unrealistic expectations.

There was a common opinion for a while among marvel fans that fan theories were mostly trash, and it sounds like it still holds true. You guys all had expectations from this show that were not based on what the show promised to be. You wanted it to be exactly like it would be in your head, but you aren’t writing or making it, so it won’t be and then you get annoyed about it. Get over it.

My primary complaint with the show is the abysmally bad script, the lackluster direction, and completely lack of momentum and pacing. Those are completely separate from complaints that stem from expectations. Even so, Secret Invasion is an adaptation - creators who make adaptations have to account for expectations as a requirement for doing the project else they should make an original work and call it something else.
