The similarities between alien species are explained in the TNG episode “The Chase” stating that life in the galaxy was seeded by a race of aliens with similar characteristics.

Age also plays a role in this. For 30 years we had a solid design for Klingons. Changing that felt wrong to the fan base. The design is cool.
