In a bold bid to reverse Labour’s record-breaking slide in the polls, Sir Keir Starmer has announced plans to dust off Tony Blair’s famously doomed digital ID scheme, the political equivalent of trying to win back your ex by reminding them of that time you cheated.
The government, which recent surveys show to be slightly less popular than bus replacement services, insists that a compulsory national digital ID will be the silver bullet that finally convinces the public they aren’t completely useless.
“What better way to win back trust,” said one minister, “than to bring back the exact same idea voters hated so much last time it helped the opposition beat us at a general election?” […]
I guess, but they’re cutting the legs out from under the Labour party. With the Huns of propaganda barreling down it’s just such a weird series of moves to piss off literally everyone over and over.
