    You want free and high quality. Generally not a sustainable business model for developers who have to eat.

      I’d be willing to pay only if I wasn’t forced to give my data to Google (because of Google Play integration).

      I deem telemetry (and therefore any Google integration) unacceptable. Especially in a product I pay for.

      I want paid and high quality. Forced telemetry is not high quality.

      Still, I think including ads is not a good choice here given almost universal hate for tracking and data collection among Lemmy users. I think it might be better if sync doesn’t have a free version at all instead of having a free version with ads.

        Sync is popular enough to draw in people who aren’t part of Lemmy’s ‘natural’ demographic. Makes sense to me that it would offer a ‘free’ tier for people who just wanna use it as a Reddit substitute.
