I never listened to a song that is so very “Schlager”. I don’ t know what you call the genre in English, but Christmas Eve certainly is “it”. And I think that’s beautiful.
It’s of the CityPop era, but it is much more melodic and toned down compared to most other songs of that style.
Yamashita wrote it as a throwaway song to fill out his Melodies album. He thought it wasn’t that good. Now it’s a radioplay tradition and there’s a movie based around it.
