How do you guys actually learn how to fix certain things? Its mind boggling how one can visit a forum and there’s people saying “oh yeah just run -c xhhkrk ()<>[] bbbhjl and that will fix your sound issue”
Like WHERE do you even start? I hate having to look things up all the time when everyone else on windows “just works”. Copying commands off forums endlessly doesn’t really help you learn.
Example, installed cachyos on an older laptop, but sound and screen dimming will not work. I have no ides where to even begin with that. I feel like a windows user could at least poke around control panel and probably fix the issue but its way harder with linux.
I have had luck with almost everything working with mint on my desktop (except vr, oculus is a nighmare to get working) and have been running that about a year. If I had to set it all up again id have to re look up everything I forgot since then…
If there was something like man but easier to parse through, that would be immensely helpful. Like for my sound issue, if there was a better organized manual that I could look under “sound” and see the inner workings laid out and common issues, thats what we need. Otherwise people are going to be terrified of linux because its so hard.

I mean maybe my tone came off a little butt head ish, I was also just kind of thinking of everyone saying “switch to linux!” And in my head im thinking of my tech illiterate friends and family and how I have to look stuff up all the time, linux really isnt ready for the masses in a lot of cases
Tbh, the biggest issue with Linux right now is that the GUI path to doing things differs too much.
You can do quite a lot of things via GUI by now, and I think that’s really important because GUI is much more discoverable. As in, not knowing what I need to do, GUI is more easy to figure out.
But the issue is that GUI changes a lot between distros, DEs or even distro/DE versions.
So if my mom (who is quite on the tech illiterate side and running Linux for years now) asks me a question, I don’t know how exactly the GUI on her distro/DE version looks like. But I can tell her some command line command that works on almost all distros.
That’s also why most of the stuff you find online tells you to copy some command into CLI, because CLI differs less.
The problem with that is that CLI is of course also much less discoverable. Once you learn where to look (help option of the command, man pages, tldr pages) and how the concept of CLI works in general, you can figure out stuff yourself. Or you just google, that’s ok too.
Right now, Linux works ok for tech illiterate masses as long as they know one guy who knows Linux quite well and they can ask them. Apart from setting stuff up in the beginning (which does require someone with a bit of skill), the tech illiterate Linuxers ask much fewer questions than the tech illiterate Windows/Mac users. So once it’s running it’s ok.
