If you’re a musician and you’re using social media platforms other than the massive mainstream ones, thank you for being here.

I hope we collectively manage to create a future environment where artists hold control over their art and algorithms and marketing budgets don’t decide who gets to make a living.

Small steps.

I’ll be taking on a personal challenge. I’ll try to get at least one artist I know or like to join at least one non-mainstream social media platform every month.

If I succeed, I’ll be back with proof. And if I succeed, you should all try it too! :) It will most likely require [yuck] logging into Meta to message people, but…

I’m willing to fill up a few barf bags while I’m at it. haha All for the greater good.

In terms of a community to post to, I suppose you could use https://lemmy.world/c/music or https://lemmy.world/c/alternativenation , both of which have subscriber counts in the thousands. Or… this one we’re on right now.

I do expect Lemmy to not be much into blatant advertising. The way I’d share my music here is in as personal a way as I can. So nothing that sounds like someone else is running your account for you, if you know what I mean. None of that “My new vinyl is now available in crimson red. Order today!” kind of stuff.

You don’t have to start your own community if you don’t want to. You can use any relevant one. If you use one with a large number of subscribers, that may help get your posts seen by a larger number of people. If you use a small one, like the one we’re on right now, quite a few people will still see it. Lemmy is relatively small, so if they browse the front page by “New” they’ll likely spot your post. It will likely be on the first page for a good 10 minutes, maybe more.

If you do start your own community here on Lemmy.world, anyone who has an account on Lemmy.world and all instances that are linked to Lemmy.world will be able to access it. The way people will discover your community is by spotting your posts in “New”, as described above.

I’m not sure how you’d upload video to Lemmy. Other than that you should be alright. I tend to sort of use YouTube as free storage. I upload as “unlisted” and then share the link here only so that people on YouTube can’t actually find it.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I wouldn’t be saying ‘hey buy this!’ Just sharing my art.

Let’s say gorillaz made a 10 part video series leading upto a song drop. Whilst it’s leading up to a song, and telling the story of the world surrounding the song, it wouldn’t necessarily fit in /c/ music. Because if you didn’t know gorillaz was a band, you wouldn’t know it was music related. I think that’s a corner I’ve painted myself into haha.
