The thing that always gets me about art deco and brutalism is that they’re not mutually exclusive. Art deco is about patterns, shapes, and artistic expression. While brutalism is about construction methods and materials. Frank Lloyd Wright’s work was brutalist and art deco.
Agreed. But art deco goes beyond architecture and was used in other forms. Art deco radios, cars etc. but brutalism doesn’t have a form of beauty when done right. It’s just not used in other forms. You only see it in architecture. You could argue that the function over form aesthetic of some cars are brutalist, but I’d disagree. Those cars are made out of a purpose of being cheap, which is kind of brutalist adjacent ideology, but not really true in form. No-nonsense isn’t the same thing as spartan design due to limited funds/technology.
One is a clock with minimalist ideals and intelligent mechanical features to display the intended perception of function over form. Creepy, cool and mysterious. The other is a fever dream of a ketamine abuser with too much money and power, nothing more.
Edit: just realized you proved me wrong about brutalism in other forms of art. Touche.
Is art deco out of date? A few brutalist buildings in an area can look really cool.

Tldr: Brutalism gets a bad rap.
