I’ve read (and experienced in some cases) the same, that announcing your goals to other people gets you most of the satisfaction that achieving them would, and leaves you in a bad spot.
Tho I would have to add that with some things, language learning being one, I feel like I’ve done better since being more public about it. I used to keep it more to myself. Not secret or anything, but was embarrassed to show the effort I’d out in combined with no immediate results. But now it’s just something I associate with my identity.
