Spotted, just barely, on a hike up Seneca Rocks in West Virginia. I almost didn’t see this little guy.
Hairy woodpeckers and downy woodpeckers are tough to tell apart, but hairies are slightly bigger and have longer bills. Not that I could tell this from the ground, but based on the picture I think this is a hairy.

He was all over the place in that tree.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is a downy. You can tell by the stripped tail feathers. Hairys have pure white tail feathers.
Oh well. I told you they’re impossible to tell apart.
