I usually think of sandpipers as being beach birds, and apparently everyone else does too if the bird guides are to be believed. I certainly was not expecting to find one standing on a stump sticking out of an alpine lake, or this lake in particular. Nevertheless, there was Actitis macularius, bold as brass.

Two of them, actually.

    I spotted one of these the other day too. I’ve only seen one so far this year. Cool photos. I like those old stumps that sprout new life in the middle of the water.
