minus-squareickplantOPMlinkfedilinkarrow-up4·24 days agoKinda! Adult Centurio senex males possess little flaps of skin under their chins that they pull up to cover the lower half of their faces like a mask. While hanging, they emit a mix of ultrasonic echolocation calls and loud, low-frequency whistles that drop into the range of human hearing. When a female approaches, the male drops his mask and rapidly beats his wings while vocalizing. It’s called a “lek” courtship. It’s when a group of males gather to perform for females. So I guess you could say that they attract with their calls and their faces. This is without and with the mask: Source: https://stri.si.edu/story/masked-singers
