They won’t be given a weapon until they’re at the front and facing the direction they need to walk in, and if they even start to turn, they’ll be shot before they can halfway pivot towards their own side. So they face the choice of being executed at that moment or walk towards the enemy force. I imagine most take their chances trying the latter. You might get to surrender, if you’re lucky.
