    One of the biggest obstacles to participation in youth programs in the US isn’t money, it’s transportation and time. Having a parent available for hours on weeknights plus away games for months implies a solid middle class home before any dues are collected.

    In more well resourced sports like football and baseball, getting the poor kids a ride home after practice and games is often essential for the program.

      Not exactly. “Club sports” have become a way that a lot of children players are developed; it is now out of the ordinary that a kid only plays school varsity sports.
