WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is going ahead with new double-digit tariffs on dozens of U.S. trading partners just as the clock runs out Friday on stopgap levies he imposed after a stinging defeat at the Supreme Court.
The United States will slap taxes of 10% to 12.5% on imports from 60 trading partners accounting for 99% of U.S. imports, charging that they have inadequately enforced bans on goods produced by forced labor.

It literally is. Read the constitutional amendment outlawing slavery in the US. Slavery is outlawed in all cases EXCEPT as punishment for crimes committed. Penal Slavery is literally explicitly legal under the US constitution.
Imo that’s quite fucked up. Then wiki says;
" The Thirteenth Amendment exempts penal labor from its prohibition of forced labor. This allows prisoners who have been convicted of crimes (not those merely awaiting trial) to be required to perform labor or else face punishment while in custody."
Basically legal slavery is still existing in the US.
Those prisoner’s labour then gets sold to fast food stores etc and the prison pockets a vast majority of the pay. If they’re safe enough to work at McDonalds then they can be released. But it’s not about that, it’s about trading human lives for corporate profits
As much as I agree with you on everything you have said a big amount of society would not agree with you assuming they understood entirety of your statement. A part of legal system is not just prevention and reformation, but punishment. It is barbaric but it stems from society as a whole. I am kind of glad that we were told that in uni (computer law for 2 credits) nobody could think of the last part. I like my uni and the people, but it was not so hard to notice it outside and sometimes with even a ridiculous amount of hypocrisy.
In my opinion being put in a cell excluded from society for an extended period is punishment enough, I know I would hate to spend 20 something hours a day looking at the same 4 walls. Also can you imagine having your employer replace you and your coworkers with prisoners because they’re cheaper, you already had a shitty job, now you don’t even have that because a literal criminal too it (ironically of no fault of their own).
If the funds for their work (being paid at least minimum wage) were being put in to a capital fund to help people who have completed their sentence re enter society of be way more willing to agree with you but at the moment the only ones profiting are the private companies “hiring” prisoners and the for-profit prison system.
