To play the devils advocate, 16 is the age of consent in Japan (where these anime are made). Pointing out the character is 16/17 is the equivalent of pointing out they’re 18. Whether you agree with that morally is a different issue.

We were flooded with messaging, left over from a time when highschool was the last step for most before the job market, about how highschool was where kids became adults. How many films from that time hype sexualized high schoolers?
