“I’m a Republican,” she would repeat a few times during our conversation, just to make sure that her occasional wariness about Donald Trump himself was not misconstrued as Democratic votership. We were shortly joined by her brother, who kept a scowl on his face as we spoke.

They both asked me whether I was a Republican or Democrat. “I vote Democrat,” I told them, admitting that I had lately been disappointed in the party.
