God, I hate the insanity over that. It’s actually ironic that so many people online now freak out at the word retarded. It’s gone through the same endless cycle as stupid, moron, idiot, dumb, imbecile, blind, crazy, cripple, dim, slow, gimp, invalid, mad, psycho, and many others.
People on Lemmy will freak out about retard, while using many of those other words regularly without even noticing them. They were all words used as clinical terms for issues in the past, that then began to be misused to insult people who didn’t have those issues, then became considered “bad” words and were replaced with new clinical terms.
There’s nothing special about the word, it’s just the latest one to go through the cycle. It’s no more or less offensive than many of the others. It’s a way to virtue signal without actually doing anything.
The people who get upset at hearing “retard” aren’t likely dedicating their lives to do anything at all to make the lives of people with severe developmental disabilities any better. They’re not making it easier for them to be in society. They’re still calling others things like dumb and stupid that have the exact same impact.
It’s not the word that causes people to feel like shit. It’s the awful truth that many people with severe developmental deficiencies understand that to varying extents. Hearing someone mocked with a word that means they’re not smart is shit when you know it could be an accurate description of you.
Before people get upset about words they see as signaling others as being bad people they’re permitted to judge and spit hate one they should spend a few years changing the diapers of adults who can’t control that several times a day, every day. Meet a woman in her 50s who has a Master’s degree and used to have a great career and fancy things who was thrown from a horse and is now seemingly around 10 mentally. And who knows that and remembers how smart she used to be and all the things she used to have and be able to do on her own while needing someone to clean her ass several times a day because she can’t control her bowels any more.
I’m sure all the lovely people here down voting are doing it because they actually have experience working with and caring for people with IDDs, and not just because they want to signal how virtuous and good they are. Blah.
