There’s a pretty wide flavor profile to horror, from the thriller/gross-out/sexplotation end of the spectrum to the dramady/mockumentary/parody end. And some movies are really a product of their era. Movies like Scream and A Cabin in the Woods are fine on their own. But they’re written like love letters to horror movie fans from the generation prior. Meanwhile, movies like Friday the 13th and Hellraiser and Alien start out as these very heavy social commentaries on class and gender, packed into a lasagna-like dish of special effects gore. But then their sequels just get strung out into action-movie slop.
