As soon as i looked at it i could tell it was the first set, but when i zoom in to look at details i can’t find a single difference. But my brain still tells me it’s the first one.
In the first one, the curve of the “r” is slightly more pronounced than the curve of the “n”, especially right next to where they connect, so it creates a subtle separation effect. On the “m”, the curves are both identical. It is really hard to see though
The first set is r-n.
Some designers solve this with monospaced typefaces. Others aren’t even aware of the issue.

That’s right, you are in c/kerning, the official comm for learning about kerning, the spacing and smooshing of nearby letters.
