when i was 13 or 14, i got busted for drinking alcohol after spending the day with some buddies. my punishment was twofold: i had my long hair cut short, and my dad called the cable company to block the two music channels that were available at that time - MTV and VH1.
it didn’t take long to get over the haircut, but i was determined to figure out how they blocked those channels at our house. perhaps someone with more knowledge about this stuff could chime in, but i found these weird interrupter devices they had attached. they looked like little metal barrels with co-ax connectors. i could remove them, watch MTV (or VH1), and then put them back on and close up the box.
Each channel is on a different frequency band on the coax line for analog cable so the cable guy installed a notch filter for each channel he wanted blocked. Cable is digital now so that method no longer works.
