Film was hyped up by so many legendary creatives - in reality it was a lackluster in plot and filled with exceedingly strange and alienating fetish content (getting bitten by mechanical teeth). Disappointing. See Flash Gordon instead.
um, i don’t know what you were expecting, pal. it’s fairly accurate to the comic books which were wacky space opera with lots of weird fetish shit in-between. it is actually quite tame compared to some french sci fi of that era.
The Mike Hodges’ Flash Gordon is not very good Flash Gordon adaptation actually. technically it is closer to a pastiche of OG Flash Gordon which was actually much closer to Star Wars. The Buster Crabbe serial is really the one to look for - and it is quite literally a blueprint for Star Wars in so many ways and it still holds up - one of the best serials of its era.
I read the comic afterwards, expecting a more cohesive experience. It’s my opinion that neither are very good. It’s not the raunchiness of the works that make me dislike it, it’s that it has little to do with either driving the plot forward or building on a cohesive theme. If the story was about sexual liberation or identity, or anything like that I would award it more points. But to me it’s just disappointing titillation (if you’re into being eaten by little mouths) without much substance.
It presents what I think could be cool ideas but then doesn’t go anywhere interesting with them.
once again - what do you expect? it was a serialized comic that did exactly what you described over and over and over again and then it was over and we got Duran Duran out of it. if you want cohesive european sci fi comics - Pilote is right there in its all glory. and if you think Barbarella is just a disappointing titillation - wait til you find out about Druuna.
Sturgeon’s law, mate. even if you go to some sacred texts like Metal Hurlant or like 90% of classic Heavy Metal - Jesus, Mary and Joseph, it’s a bill of goods in-between some god-tier stuff.
Funny thing about Heavy Metal is that it actually got better after Eastman took over in the 90s. In a sense that instead of “what is this shit?” you started getting more “meh” and “eh” stuff which made contrast between actually good stuff less shocking.

You re right, there is a whole lot of crappy scifi out there. Will avoid that one too.

I have a copy just so when people ask I can share it.
Let them waste time watching it rather than waste my time explaining how awful it is.
An LSD fever dream of a deranged author, hahaha
