That’s not really a conflict to do with American Imperialism (as per the meme).
I think sometimes the word “tankie” is used by well meaning centrist Liberal to mean “anyone Socialist” and then pose these really simple strawmen, which might even be informed by, or aid in going after Socialists of all varieties.
…and that feels very much like something the conservative right (generationally) has set up, as much as it’s a response to “once some communist prick was mean to me because I hadn’t read the same books as him” (a known phenomena, and problem in a few communities)…
…either way it seems like fodder to create leftwing infighting. Which probably isn’t a good thing.
