    Confederate generals didn’t build those. The Jim Crow South did a hundred years later to piss on the civil rights movement.

      What’s your point? If they built it in their time, the Jim Crow south would have destroyed them a hundred years earlier?

        The people depicted on those statues didn’t want monuments built to them in the first place. That’s the difference between Trump and those guys.

        They might have been racist upper class douchebags, but they didn’t want to be remembered for their part in the most destructive and pointless war on American soil. They had a sense of shame, something Trump doesn’t have.

          I don’t know about this `racists who fought a war over owning slaves “had a sense of shame” and “didn’t want to be remembered for their part in the most destructive and pointless war” take.

          When they eventually did build statues, they imported them from the north. They didn’t build them in their lifetime because it wasn’t a popular thing to do, and as such they literally didn’t have the skills or foundries to make them. Not to mention they were actually fighting a war, not sitting in their bunkers ordering air strikes.
