My own view:
Those right wing nuts would have LOVED his character, were he not gay.
Nearly everything else about that character fits perfectly into the archetype of masculinity and rugged individualism these same chuds jerk off about.
Yep he was a full on libertarian prepper lone wolf (who happened to like dick). And the show even went out of its way to show us that this gay guy needed the world to literally end for him to be able to embrace his own sexuality. The guy never had a gay relationship in this whole life, probably because of fear of “his people” turning their backs on him
