Its an old LG, but given the recent light on the lengths they’ll go to spy on us, I figured this guy was better off without any ability to even connect wirelessly. Don’t know if the Ethernet still works but I plan on keeping my TVs as dumb as possible, HDMI only.

If you’re wondering how to open lg TVs you just have to remove all the screws then start pulling open at the bottom and open the clips going up. With the TV face down on a soft surface just keep pulling on the back case from the bottom, it’ll take some effort to pop open. The top edge folds open more like a hidge than clips.

From what I read yesterday LG monitors can install nefarious drivers on Windows machines using the HDMI connection. Maybe that’s new, and maybe it’s only monitors.

when you connect a device to Windows, it tries to find drivers for it, regardless of what it is. LG puts out garbage software that can be picked up by Windows looking for drivers that then gets installed.

Windows looking for software when a new monitor is plugged in isn’t necessarily bad, cuz maybe there’s an ICC color profile or something specific to whatever monitor you plug in that gets delivered this way, but LG just uses that install pathway to put crap on your computer.

In a sane world that would be “exceeding authorized access” under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and LG execs would go to prison for it.

That’s a Windows “feature”. Essentially Microsoft lets you (as the hardware manufacturer) automatically install whatever you want when a matching device is plugged in.
