I’m proficient in Star Wars with probably some post grad level on the original trilogy. I moved to Arrakis in my teens. It is hard to live there using Starfleet ethics but the competency porn is the same in both. Can’t stand Rand or LotR, probably for some of the same reasons. Never cared about Enders Game But-With-Magic but it also came out just after highschool.

I actively avoided philosophy because every person I knew with a degree in philosophy wasn’t able to order a sandwich. But it crept in more and more over the years until I lived long enough to see The Good Place literally make the same sandwich joke. I probably get several hours of philosophy a week now just from my podcast feed. Now I think the trick is that studying philosophy is fine, just don’t get the degree.

Huh! I don’t think I’ve ever come across someone who hated LotR. I’d be curious to hear more, if you ilke. As for Ender, I’ve never read a series that shifted so crazily in tone and treatment, but it quickly became a very different series when it probably could have milked the first book forever.

Btw, I found the following Star Wars short pretty impressive. A lot of these fan-created confrontations get pretty tedious & obvious, but this one managed to hold its own I think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_H6S6k7cQU

I should probably get back to listening to podcasts. I play a lot of casual games between browsing, lots of times listening to NASA mission feeds, but it’s getting a bit stale. I guess part of the problem is that many podcasts, despite their excellent material, are conducted by people with completely amateur voice control, like Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History. Just excruciating for me to listen to, sadly.

My cousin is in fact a philosophy PhD, and a fairly well-known speaker, author and womens’ rights advocate. Not boring or windy at all, altho she’s always been kind of brassy, quizzical and direct. American mom, Hungarian father. She grew up in Italy.

If they have decent speech quality and sound recording? I can listen to a podcast at 2.5x speed. If it’s a bunch of drunk Scottish people I might get away with 1.3x.

I’ll save the Lord of the Rings lecture for another day.

          Bloody hell. oO
But even if I had that ability, I’d never be able to use it. Whatever I’m reading, every couple sentences I have to stop and process.
