“Things wouldn’t be so bad if they just stopped resisting. Why don’t they? They don’t want to fight, statistically.”

I’m amazed at how often the “rapist argument” pops up on Lemmy, in respect to Ukraine.

Yeah, maybe their civilian population is sick of war, and they don’t want to be drafted. And maybe Ukraine should make their own decisions/have their sovereignty respected. But, you know, disrespecting their sovereignty is the whole reason this is happening.

So even if you are unquestionably right, what the heck does it matter? Russia doesn’t care what Ukraine thinks, nor anything about their sovereignty and decision making power, otherwise they wouldn’t have launched a massive military invasion Ukraine clearly did not consent to.

I am going to remember this next time a western power invades someone to “defend democracy.”

Yes. Yes, I am! It’s a shitshow, and whether we like the country or not, Iran at least deserves to have its sovereignty recognized.

This is Lemmy. I ain’t telling you squat about my personal life; it’s beside the point, which is that supporting the invasion of Ukraine and opposing the assault on Iran is hypocritical. Of course neither civilian population likes the war, but is that justification for them to just fold their right to sovereignty?

“The purpose of this operation is to protect people who for eight years now have been facing humiliation and genocide perpetrated by the Kyiv regime,” [Putin] said, according to an English translation from the Russian Mission in Geneva. “To this end, we will seek to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine, as well as bring to trial those who perpetrated numerous bloody crimes against civilians, including against citizens of the Russian Federation.”

It’s not too dissimilar to the U.S’s justification for assaulting Iran; demilitarization: https://www.state.gov/releases/office-of-the-spokesperson/2026/03/secretary-of-state-marco-rubio-remarks-to-press-6
