Nah, if the first choice is bad, a huge percentage of people just bounce off of the thing. If they truly went down, we’d see a growth spurt on federated social media.
I don’t think a large growth would benefit the fediverse. As it is right now, it doesn’t get all that much bot traffic and astroturfing. And even besides that, consider the quality of comments on more popular sites like YouTube and Facebook. Reddit was moving in that direction, too, and already had that feeling of commenting into the void because there was so much chatter going on already, it felt more like a crowd than a community.
I’d rather see the internet become a large collection of small sites again rather than any single site or platform dominating. Plus if you take a step back and don’t gave a profit motive, I don’t think there’s even that much of a benefit to something getting really big or popular, other than a bit of an ego boost because you liked something before it got popular and are ahead of the curve or whatever.

It gave 8 results. First one was a reddit post, though at least it appears to be about neocities. 5 results, including the 2nd one, are for fucking google links (that do link to neocities if you click them but I don’t know why the fuck they are routed through google on ddg which uses bing).

I share your opinion about the internet being better in this decentralized way, but this is what I consider awesome about federation. Growth for Lemmy for example, isn’t the same as growth for Insta. On Lemmy, you retain the option to choose where you hang out, and what you use the app for. Instagram tries extremely hard to railroad your experience. You don’t control the algorithm, you don’t control your feed, you can only trust yourself to their decisions, where federation allows… Well, defederation lol.
Just because Lemmy might grow, doesn’t mean the small places would get bulldozed.
Yeah, I agree that Lemmy has potential to not be as bad as some of the others. Like if there’s a new Lemmy website, it probably won’t be pushed on people, or if it is it will be because no one wants to maintain the old one. There won’t be incentive to keep people as engaged as possible.
But while that was what made me leave reddit, it wasn’t like that site was perfect before that or that all the bullshit came from the admins. The inescapable (on that site) bullshit came from them but moderators and users were both making a bunch of the subs shitty before that.
