Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck next year, according to CEO Elon Musk, who said on X that the company will use the factory space to build more two-seater Cybercab robotaxis.

The decision to wind down the futuristic, steel-clad EV comes after just a few short years of underwhelming sales. When Musk handed over the first few Cybertrucks in late 2023, he predicted Tesla would sell around 250,000 per year. It was supposed to be such a cornerstone of Tesla’s future that, before construction began, the company talked about its Texas factory as the “Cybertruck factory.” But Tesla has instead sold just tens of thousands — total — over the last three years.

Pretty much. By the time this is out of production, it’ll have sold only slightly less than the F150, and it’s sold more than the Rivian R1T.

But the F150 or R1T didn’t have the same hype, or disappointing results compared to the expectations.

I still think it would have sold better if they actually made the cheap version as they announced, and if they’d done the double stacked batteries to get 500m of range (while still keeping that original price) but they basically built a completely different vehicle than was announced and expected people to still want it. Total fuck up.

What? I must be completely misunderstanding you, because in just 2025, Ford sold 828,842 F-series trucks. The Cybertruck has sold in the tens of thousands. Period. Over its lifetime.

      500m of range

Half a kilometer really isn’t that much ;-)

The 39000 base model lightning would have been perfect. But dealership markups would have prevented it from ever happening anyway. I still see them all over, I’m not sure how all these people are paying for $80k trucks, it’s insane. Riding my 2009 out until it dies or falls apart, hoping for an affordable pick-up when that time comes. Might just get a used lightning if the price is right.

Wasn’t the 39k one for commercial fleets only? And ya these truck prices have been stupid.

Hopefully the next batch of cheaper ones help change things and more people can transition.
