We’ve had it arguably much worse here in Hungary. We’ve had Orbán’s regime rule over us for 16 years with uninterrupted 2/3 constitutional majority. They’ve replaced the whole supreme court with their puppets and wrote a completely new constitution. Plus, they completely reformed the elections and redrew all the voting districts to favor them as much as possible. And all of this, was only their first term. Which promptly brought them 3 more terms.
But on the 4th time, they lost to a new party who gathered more votes and bigger majority than they ever could. This was this spring. And already a whole bunch of them are in prison. Lower, to middle level ones, up to ministers/cabinet members. Balázs Hankó was the Minister of Culture and Innovation back in April. Now he’s been in prison for a month and his arrest has been prolonged by at least until February for the investigation. He has colluded and given out funds for Fidesz, the ruling party, to campaign, instead of using the money for cultural purposes. He didn’t get anyone killed, yet he will most likely spend a lot of years behind bars.
The ringleaders, Orbán and his right hand men have not been charged yet, but we’re pretty sure it’s only a matter of time. The investigators have to go through the lower level criminals at first, to get enough evidence on the top dogs. It’s not a done deal yet, but we are pretty hopeful.
Yes, democrats did not secure a 2/3 majority in the house or the senate. And the current leaders are DINOs (Jeffries, Schumer). But don’t lose hope just as you are in the gates of victory. If you can get the DINOs out of the way, I think there will be hope for serious accountability to be done.
