Hello PCMR community!

On July 13th, we asked the community for your opinion if you would like to change the name of this community.

Results of the Survey :

  • Yes - 28.1%
  • No - 71.9% (winner)

Of the 1,201 responses received, we as a community have democratically decided that we should not change the name from PC Master Race. I am grateful to our community for your input, as this was a difficult topic to navigate together.

If you would like to review the history of this, please check out this post here: https://lemmy.world/post/1430610

We’ll pin this post for some time and then consider adding a bullet into the sidebar for this Community to help stave off further discussions around this topic as the community has already decided collectively.

Kind regards,

The Moderator Team

Due to some of the recent targeted attacks against Lemmy.world, I noticed that the image I shared with this post was purged from their servers.

      • is this an official moderator note or a personal request? I have pre-emptively complied but I’d like to know nonetheless.
      • seems rather tone deaf to police the word “retard” after we literally just finished a poll about using an edgy joke as the community name, especially given it’s literally used in the same video the name PCMR originates from.
      • every insult people use has roots in some sort of denigratory language: Idiot, moron, imbecile, mongoloid, and stupid were all medical terms at some point much like retard was. Crucially, they all mean the same thing: a person of lesser intelligence. Are they all slurs or is only “retard” special?
      • is the issue that I am specifically calling a group of people “retards”? Would calling an action “retarded” be more suitable?

Antik is one of the admins of lemmy.world. He holds administrative authority over the entire forum rather than being specifically involved as a moderator here. He could have removed the comment himself, but he chose to request you change it instead (which I would have also done, had he not already handled it).

As a moderator of this community, I’d like to express our shared sentiment. The use of the term “retard” as an insult is something we discourage. Its appropriateness in language has evolved over time, and it’s increasingly considered inappropriate due to its derogatory associations, regardless of its original meaning. Language is subject to change, and words that were once commonplace are regularly perceived as offensive now. Regardless of personal views on the word, if the admins have deemed it unsuitable for use on this platform, it’s something that we will also enforce.

There is an abundance of other words that effectively convey your message.

          Understood.

I disagree with the sentiment but I’m not american and not a native speaker so my sensibilities are clearly in the minority here, and rules are rules.

Feel free to yeet my request for clarification, I’d do it but I don’t want you to think I’m shirking responsibility for the questions therein.

I’m an American and a native speaker. We’re not all like this. The Fediverse is a very prudish place.

              I’m beginning to realise that.
