Has it really been that long? Apparently so. Valve originally announced their rebranding of Steam Play with Proton back on August 21st, 2018. Seems like a good time for a quick reflection being halfway to a decade old now with the tech that gave rise to the Steam Deck.

    WINE was always a bit hit or miss, but once you got something working, it was usually ok

    Yeah, it was a pain to get it working but when you had it, it was almost flawless. I had hundreds of hours clocked on League of Legends, Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 before Proton even existed. The native port of PCSX2 used to suck hard and I used it on wine for years too.

    Sure Proton made it more convenient, but it was more of an gradual improvement than the quantum leap some people claim it to be.

    I agree with what you said and I don’t understand why you’re being downvoted. Harder than with Proton? Yes. But gaming with (plain old) wine was already a thing before Proton.
