There’s a similar trend between bicycle enthusiasts, at least some of them: Make your (new) bike look like a worn out old wreck. They use tape, stickers, paint, even scratches (only slightly denting some parts) and cheap or ugly looking extra parts like bottle holders to make the bike as unappealing at possible. Underneath all that masquerade it’s a perfectly fine and often very expensive vehicle.
