For example how do we avoid having unique Ask Lemmy communities on each instance?

I’m brand new to Lemmy and trying to figure out if it will fill the reddit void.

    More or less in the same way that Reddit prevents duplicate communities. You don’t really.

    The users just kinda eventually pick one (or maybe they don’t and you just have a couple different communities all dedicated to the same thing, but with different users in each).

      This seems reasonable. I think eventually the duplicates will become manageable as the more active popular communities will be easier to spot.
