In a statement to CNN, the global affairs department of the Canadian government said: “Since the beginning of 2023, certain states in the US have passed laws banning drag shows and restricting the transgender community from access to gender affirming care and from participation in sporting events.”

Canada has provided specific guidelines to its LGBTQ+ citizens traveling abroad: “Watch for laws that: criminalize same-sex activities and relationships [and] criminalize people based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics.”

“Some countries may use laws related to ‘vagrancy’, ‘public nuisance’ or ‘public morals’ to criminalize 2SLGBTQI+ people.”

“2SLGBTQI+” add one lower case letter and it’s a secure password for something. Has it officially become self parody at this point?

I think canada explicitly includes 2S for two spirit since they have a lot of indigenous people to whom its culturally important, so it does seem longer than most cases where 2S ends up under the + umbrella.

This may surprise you, but not everywhere is America. Here in Canada, that’s been the acronym for quite a while now. “2S” (two-spirit) refers to Indigenous queer identities.

I mean, I’d say two-spirit is a queer identity rooted in indigenous beliefs. An indigenous guy that is gay isn’t two-spirit, and you can be two-spirit without being indigenous.

      very insightful comment.

Instead of concerning yourself one bit with the important part of the news, you decided to pick on the acronym made for inclusion.

While to some it might seem as exaggerated, the acronym is this lengthy to bring the inclusion spotlight and to raise awareness of certain things. In day to day talk most people wouldn’t bother with the official acronym and LGBT or LGBTQ+ OR LGBT+ would do the trick.

The full acronym, in this context, is a formality most likely.

Oh, there’s a lot to be said for the important part, notably how it shouldn’t be an advisory for the United States GENERALLY, but rather certain, specific (red) states.

I’m certain the West coast would welcome Canadians of all stripes. Gulf coast? Eh… erm… em…

Literally the beginning of the article makes it clear Canada is refering to “certain states” and it’s repeated through the entire article. You just came here to crack a joke in poor taste and didn’t even bother reading the article lol.

LGBTQ+ citizens are at risk when traveling to the US due to numerous discriminatory laws passed at state level, the Canadian government has warned.

“Some states have enacted laws and policies that may affect 2SLGBTQI+ persons. Check relevant state and local laws,” the government’s website reads.

Also as someone from outside the U.S., I’d understand it even if the advising was country-wide and not state specific. But it isn’t.
