Lemmy is a link/content aggregator in the same vein as Hacker News and Reddit, however, Lemmy is federated, which means that it is a decentralized group different communities hosted on different servers (called instances), and that while the individual of each instance has more power, their actions do not affect other instances, causing the formation of diverse communities with different cultures to be more likely compared to centralized services like Reddit.
