Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko has warned that Liam Lawson’s promotion from reserve to works driver role could happen quickly. The New Zealander is a clear candidate for the AlphaTauri seat for 2024 and both Yuki Tsunoda and, above all, Daniel Ricciardo could be in danger.

Marko applauds Lawson 's work during the Italian GP, in which he came very close to the points. The Austrian maintains that one of the New Zealander’s priorities for the remainder of the year is to win the Japanese Super Formula and if he wins the title at the end of October, his confirmation as an official Formula 1 driver in 2024 could not take long.

" Liam has been with us for a while and he’s a very tough driver and smart during track fights, he’s a bit like Bruce McLaren. He’s someone we have to look out for in the future. The speed was there at Monza and that’s a good sign", Marko commented in an interview with Servus TV.

“He will continue to drive Super Formula in Japan and he is second in the championship there. The fight is very difficult, but the cars are faster than in Formula 2. With the races being so far away, he does not have as much visibility, but he can win the title. Maybe I get a seat in Formula 1 instead of continuing as a reserve driver, that could happen quickly .”

Marko remarks that the adaptation has gone well with Lawson despite the few days he has had and he already sees him as a suitable driver to run in Formula 1. The Austrian recalls that he will have another opportunity and both in Singapore and Japan he must continue to improve to win integers for a seat in 2024.

if he wins the title at the end of October, his confirmation as an official Formula 1 driver in 2024 could not take long.

Helmut Marko is such an idiot. Not because he’s considering Lawson now but because he dismissed Lawson for so long. Even now Lawson apparently only has a chance if he wins the championship in Japan. Someone who won the very first F2 race he competed in and who actually contests the championship in his very first season of both Super Formula and in 2021 also DTM is obviously a quality driver.

Overlooking Lawson and instead first trying to get Colton Herta and then picking De Vries based on nothing but the performance of a single race was already moronic back then.

100% agree. Baffling that he’s not already confirmed tbh. His f2 season was electric, not Piastri quality but way up there and exciting on track. He’s like Iwasa on this season, flashes of insane brilliance and he’s already shown this on his two outings on f1

As much as I wanted De Vries to excel, I thought Lawson should be there from day one, even in place of Ricciardo

I also hoped that De Vries would perform well and everyone likes Danny Ric but what’s the point of a junior program that actually produces a capable young driver when Marko rather hires a Mercedes driver after a single outing?
