It’s a negative feedback loop. Worse interchanges -> less people biking -> less reason to have bike. friendly interchanges -> worse interchanges

I live in the Netherlands, and I firmly believe we just got very lucky that we liked biking so much. Our biggest political party for the past few years has been a car focussed party. But because so many people cycle, they couldn’t just not account for them.

I was a hardcore commuter in the Los Angeles area from 2009-2014. This is one of the most bike friendly places in the USA and it is definitely not safe here. I was hit 6 times while commuting. The last one left me partially disabled. It is a culture problem here. All of my major crashes were from driveways and illegal u-turns. I think the only solution here is forced awareness. Every time I was hit it was an incompetent and unaware idiot driver and completely preventable. This should be just like a DUI with a mandatory fine and loss of license for a year. That kind of consequence would force a reasonable cultural awareness and responsible driving.

Wait… it sounds like you’re saying drivers get less of a consequence if they hit a pedestrian on a bicycle than if they got a dui. Tell me that’s not true! Please?

It’s very sadly true, especially if you have money. Jenner after their transition to woman, hit a woman on a bike while in their car and killed the woman. No consequences what so ever…

We have politicians who get DUIs and. Nothing Happens, hell we have politicians like Gatez who has sex with minors and he is still serving his term in politics!!

There are little to no consequences from the police. If the person has money or assets, you can sue them in civil court for basically any amount you can justify in a case, but you’ll still need around $100k in liquid cash just to get the chance at that. The person’s insurance will basically try to write you a check for the drivers full policy at your earliest convenience, but in a serious crash, this isn’t even a decent down payment on the hospital bill. Not to mention, you probably have a case against them for under insuring the driver if they had any prior record, at which point the insurance company is on the hook for a lot more. Any way around it, you’re not getting anything unless you have the money to front the legal experts and attorney in a case. It is all designed so that poor people get nothing.
